Rancho Cucamonga CA Area Guide

Woman relocatingRancho Cucamonga is located in San Bernardino County, California. As of 2000, Rancho Cucamonga’s population was 127,743. The community is situated at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, just 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Living in Rancho Cucamonga gives you the opportunity to experience skiing, hiking, and desert and ocean sports all within minutes!

Rancho Cucamonga derives its name from a Tongva place name that probably means “sandy place” or “place of the villages where the waters come out.” The northern half of Rancho Cucamonga is located in the foothills, where there used to be many artesian wells and creeks. The soil there is extremely sandy and rocky due to storm runoff from the mountains. Cucamonga is also thought to possibly mean “light over the mountain.”

Rancho Cucamonga History

HisotryCalifornia was invaded by American forces in 1846 and made it into a state by 1850. Southern California was known was being a “random collection of adobes rimmed by sandy wastes, wild mustard, and willow trees.” Rancho Cucamonga was purchased by John Rains and his wife. Rains expanded the existing vineyards and imported brick masons from Ohio so that he could build his home. After John Rains’ death, the Rancho went into foreclosure and was sold to Isaias Hellman and other businessmen who later formed the Cucamonga Company. Hellman started the Cucamonga Homestead Association but had trouble getting water to the community. Hellman established the Iowa tract in 1882 and finally brought water to the community through the Cucamonga Canyon.

Rancho Cucamonga has a rich history and diverse background. Many people came together to form this community, including numerous Mexican families and Italian immigrants. Their community became known as North Town, filled with beautiful vineyards and groves. The community had a dance hall, theatre, markets, restaurants, and a church, many of which still exist today. Rancho Cucamonga was finally incorporated into a city in 1977 as a result of a merger between Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda.
