Rancho Cucamonga CA Area Guide
Rancho Cucamonga derives its name from a Tongva place name that probably means “sandy place” or “place of the villages where the waters come out.” The northern half of Rancho Cucamonga is located in the foothills, where there used to be many artesian wells and creeks. The soil there is extremely sandy and rocky due to storm runoff from the mountains. Cucamonga is also thought to possibly mean “light over the mountain.” Rancho Cucamonga History
Rancho Cucamonga has a rich history and diverse background. Many people came together to form this community, including numerous Mexican families and Italian immigrants. Their community became known as North Town, filled with beautiful vineyards and groves. The community had a dance hall, theatre, markets, restaurants, and a church, many of which still exist today. Rancho Cucamonga was finally incorporated into a city in 1977 as a result of a merger between Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda.
