Claremont is located in east Los Angeles County, California and is home to approximately 35,000 people. A gateway to California’s Inland Empire, Claremont is more than welcoming with its tree-lined streets and unique, historic buildings. This college town is situated right at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and is home to seven institutions of higher learning. Claremont is often referred to as “The City with Trees and PhDs.” Money Magazine rated Claremont as the fifth-best place to live in the United States and was at the top of the list for locations in California.

Claremont is a primarily residential area with large trees, shady streets, and friendly people. The Village is a popular commercial area of Claremont located adjacent to the colleges. The Village is scattered with small street-front stores, boutiques, art galleries, offices, and restaurants. Claremont has been a winner of the National Arbor Day Association's Tree City award for 22 consecutive years. When the city was incorporated in 1907, citizens planted numerous trees. Claremont is one of the few remaining places in North America with American Elm trees that have not been exposed to Dutch Elm Disease.

Claremont History

The Serrano Indians were the first people known to occupy the land that is now Claremont. Mission San Gabriel was founded in 1771, when the Spanish period in California began. The mission owned land from San Bernardino Mountains to San Pedro Bay, of which Claremont was a part. By 1834, the missions were secularized by the Mexican government and the land became part of the Rancho San Jose owned by Ricardo Vejar and Don Ygnacio Palomares.

In 1887 the Santa Fe Railroad helped create the community of Claremont. Claremont was one of many towns anticipating a growth in population due to the railroad. However, the real estate boom was short-lived, and Claremont would have become deserted if a local land company had not decided to transfer its Hotel Claremont and 260 vacant lots to the recently founded Pomona College in 1888.

In 1904 the people of Claremont began to talk of incorporating their city. Most residents did not want to rely on Los Angeles County for services. Incorporation was finally approved by a vote of 73 to 49, and Claremont was officially incorporated on October 3, 1907. The local citrus industry was expanding as were colleges in the area. Citrus growers in Claremont established one of the earliest citrus cooperatives for marketing and shipping citrus fruit, a model that led to the organization of the Sunkist cooperative. Opened in 1954, the San Bernardino Freeway made it easier for people not associated with citrus or the colleges to live in Claremont.

Claremont Parks and Recreation

Claremont is home to many beautiful parks and recreational locations. Memorial Park is Claremont’s primary park and is the site of many of the community’s events, including concerts and holiday celebrations. Claremont also provides many activities for senior citizens and varying support groups.

Blaisdell Park

Blaisdell Park is located in the southeast corner of Claremont. It is home to the Blaisdell Community Building where hot lunches are served to seniors in the area. The park also contains a handicapped-accessible playground, tennis court, restrooms, and group picnic facilities.

Cahuilla Park

Cahuilla Park is located north of Claremont High School on the west side of Indian Hill Boulevard. It is the largest improved park in the Claremont and contains the Youth Activity Center and Taylor Hall. The buildings are used for meetings, classes, and are available for rent. The park is frequently used for community events such as concerts, adult sports leagues and large group picnics.

Chaparral Park

Chaparral Park is a small neighborhood park located adjacent to Chaparral School. It is used primarily for passive recreation.

El Barrio Park

El Barrio Park is a neighborhood park which is located on property leased from Claremont McKenna College. El Barrio has a large open area which is frequently used for soccer games.

La Puerta Sports Park

La Puerta Sports Park is the Claremont’s primary soccer park and is built on land leased from the Claremont Unified School District. It is used nearly year-round by organized soccer groups within the city.

Memorial Park

Memorial Park is Claremont's primary community park. It contains the historic Garner House which is the current home of Claremont Heritage. Memorial Park is the site for many community events such as the annual Fourth of July celebration and summer concerts-in-the-park. Memorial Park is also the site of the Claremont’s tiny-tots program, a summer day camp program, and many large group picnics.

Senior Programs

Claremont provides a variety of services, programs, and classes for older adults. These activities include art, beading, sewing, knitting, bridge, and pinochle classes. Support groups offered vary from alcohol support to bereavement or wellness groups.

First Street Gallery Art Center of the Tierra del sol Foundation is a program for adults with developmental disabilities. It is a unique art center founded on the proposition that human potential for creativity and artistic expression is not limited by physical or developmental challenges. Here people with challenges can develop creativity and make important contributions to the cultural and economic life of their communities.

Lamy Avery Gallery International

The Lamy Avery Gallery International focuses on displaying the work of renowned and emerging artists from around the globe. The gallery also strives to assemble a variety of media from painting, sculpture, photography, icons and more.

Raymond M Alf Museum of Paleontology

The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology is located on the campus of The Webb Schools. The museum mission is to serve Southern California as an educational resource, to act as a center of paleontological research for the international scientific community, and to provide a unique curricular ingredient for The Webb Schools.

Inland Pacific Ballet

The Inland Pacific Ballet’s mission is to build a professional ballet company of national stature in the Inland Empire of Southern California. They are committed to producing staged productions of classic story ballets as well as presenting the best in contemporary choreography. The Inland Pacific Ballet strives to introduce new audiences to the magic of ballet and to make the experience more available and accessible to all. The Company is also committed to the nurturing of new talent and provides an essential training ground for serious young dancers.

Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra

The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra was founded in 1989. It is a 90-member, advanced-level, full symphony orchestra comprised of musicians ages 12 to 20 who attend public and private schools in Southern California.

Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

The Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is the largest botanical garden dedicated exclusively to the state's native plants. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the meandering pathways of this 86 acre natural setting which offers panoramic mountain views throughout the year.
